The most common screw used today to join wood is the flat-head screw. In most cases, you'll want to drive the screw head either flush with the board's surface, or below the surface.
If the screw is being especially stubborn, try using a hammer. With one hand, hold your screwdriver in place and slowly try to turn it while hitting the back of the screwdriver with a hammer. This is the same premise that an impact driver works on. The impacts knock the screw loose a bit while you are trying to turn it free.
Reverse thread section (Starborn Cap-Tor xd deck screws): A section of reversed thread just under the head of the deck screw helps prevent dimpling and mushrooming (raised area around the screw head). A similar reverse thread on SPAX stainless steel wood deck screws helps prevent the screw from backing out as the lumber dries out.
After making the counterbore, drill a pilot hole for the screw using a separate twist bit the same diameter as the screw's shank. Place the twist bit in the tapered hole made by the point of the brad-point bit; that way, the pilot hole will be exactly in the center of the counterbore.
2 Drill a pilot hole through one piece of wood into the other, using a drill bit that is just slightly smaller in diameter than the screw. 3 Screw the brass screw in by hand, through the pilot hole. If the screw becomes too hard to turn, remove it and drill a slightly larger pilot hole.
Three slot-headed wood timber screws out and one to go. They hold a toilet bowl down. No movement with a manual screwdriver, wd40, 20 stone mate and a swear word.
If your deck joists are still in good shape, might work out okay. This would take you as far as getting the old boards off... If you wind up with portions of screws sticking up from the joists (after screw heads break off), you might find these would come out after grabbing them with a vise-grip pliers and turning them counter-clockwise.

Screws don't pop out like nails when used for decking and they are easy to remove when repairs are needed, making them ideal to use with wood decking materials. The screw should sink into the framing material by 1 inch or more.
Learn how to prevent splitting wood and stripping screw heads. Drilling pilot holes and clearance holes makes it easier to drive wood screws and helps create a strong connection. Use a combination ...
They are typically found in decking. I use them when I get my hard oak pallets as I have lost bits, nails and screws in that wood. Image for nutty.com. If you take a listen to a gentleman on YouTube he would suggest you use a bar of hand soap to lubricate the screw. The man in the video only talks about lubrication but in theory that should help prevent overheating which makes the screw more malleable and susceptible to breaking.
Driving a wood screw directly into oak lumber often causes the screw head to strip out or the screw shank to twist apart. Softer wood compacts when screws enter, but dense oak hardwood resists the cutting action of threads.
How to Lubricate Wood Screws. Driving a large screw into hard wood like oak can be difficult, but these tips will make it easier. First, be sure to choose the right driver tip for your drill. There are three different sized Phillip bits. Number one is for very small screws, number two is for medium screws and number three is for large screws.
To prevent this from happening, drill a pilot hole in the wood and countersink the screw head before driving the screw. A reversible drill driver bit, such as the DeWalt Flip Drive , which has a drill bit and countersink on one end and a screwdriver bit on the other, is a great way to speed up the process.
Use this drill bit to drill directly into the top of the damaged wood screws. The pilot hole only needs to be about 1/8 of an inch. Put the screw extractor into the pilot hole on the screw and gently tap it in place with a hammer until it is secure.

Screws designed for fastening wood come in two basic forms: steel or stainless steel wood screws, or utility screws (often generically known as deck screws). Utility screws are the workhorses of framing carpentry and outdoor woodworking projects.
When fastening wood, once the piece to be fastened is gone through, generally I find 1" into the second, or the piece you are fastening to is enough to hold. Of course, there are variations on this, depending on the circumstances. On deck boards, IMHO, 3" screws for a 5/4 deck board is way over kill, 2 1/2" is plenty for that.
There are many different types of screws, but only certain types are applicable for woodworking. While all wood screws have an aggressive thread for grabbing and holding the wood, there are many differences in the varieties of wood screws, based on the gauge, length, head type, and drive type of the screw in question.
