I want to paint some wooden furniture. I would use matt emulsion then coloured wax but I've acquired a large tin of cream silk emulsion. Has anyone used this before and did you wax or polish over afterwards please?
Painting a table and book shelf with Acrylic Emulsion.
Some people can be put off by the cost, but you can easily make your own paint in any colour you like, cheaply. Simply mix some white emulsion with a poster paint of your choice to achieve your desired hue, then add roughly one part talcum powder to three parts paint, and mix well.
Painting furniture can transform a generic mass-produced product into a personalised item unique to you. A lot of people are keen to customise their furniture for this reason but many find themselves put off by horror stories of people trying to paint their furniture and it all peeling off a few days later.
If you are painting over an old oil based paint with a modern waterbased one, or if you are painting over a new, unfinished surface such as new wood, it may be better to prime the surface first. Our Undercoat can be used on most surfaces to prepare for waterbased paint.
No, You can not paint wood with emulsion as it wont give smooth finish, first of all paint wont stick to the wood surface. Emulsions are plastic paints, usually mixed with water to paint. Best option would be to use Enamel Paint for the Wood or better use Wood Polish.
If you want to achieve a more shabby look then a few coats of emulsion instead of satinwood will allow you to distress the wood as much as you want, maybe using different shades of paint to achieve depth and interest, and you can achieve a lovely smooth finish all over too if you gently sand all over afterwards using fine or between layers ...
Step 3: Paint with emulsion of choice Roll on 2 coats of your chosen emulsion paint. I generally prefer eggshell for furniture (I can very highly recommend Little Greene’s Oil Eggshell paint), in which case you can skip step 4, but if you have a matte emulsion lying around, as I did, you can use this too.I used Little Greene French Grey Dark 163.
2. Sand the furniture. Flatten and degloss an old finish with a palm sander and 120- to 150-grit sandpaper, scraping off loose paint with a paint scraper as you work.
You can use emulsion on bare wood as a primer/undercoat, though it it's not as good as the real thing. In your case, I would think that the existing varnish has good and bad potential: It will act as a primer in its own right, so you could put the emulsion straight on.
Now, if you find out that the furniture does NOT contain lead, then yes you can follow the usual process of sand/prime/paint. I’d love to see photos when you’re done! Hope this helps.
On the other hand having used an acrylic key coat, you could go on with an emulsion coat x 2 which will dry flat but you do over time face the danger of the paint chipping. NOTE, which ever acrylic primer you go for make sure it will take an oil or water based top coat.
Most modern furniture painting is done with water based paints like emulsion (latex) or chalk paint. So what's a girl to do? It's generally safe to assume a factory lacquered modern pine piece will have had the knots treated and should be okay to paint if you're not sanding and removing that treatment.
You were very lucky to get emulsion to work on top of varnish Also Emulsion is normally not recommended for kitchen or bathroom due to steam ... they produce a specific paint for these rooms. ...
If you buy Annie Sloan paint from Carte Blanche, Cait can tell you the paint plus sample pots so you can mix to approximate the colours you have chosen. Sue Carr March 15th, 2012 at 13:11 I have a victorian dark oak side board I want to paint.
If you paint over gloss paint with normal matt emulsion, it just won’t stick and just slides everywhere. Trust me, we tried. Even if you do manage to cover it, the shininess of the gloss eventually comes through again.
If you ever thought of painting matt emulsion straight over varnish, then don’t! This was acrylic matt emulsion from a sampler applied straight onto a varnished wooden kitchen door. The paint was 3 days old and “looked” solid.
Paint is a good way to cheer up or disguise furniture and accessories that are tired, tatty or just the wrong colour or finish. It can transform everything from cheap cupboards, chests of drawers ...
Shona I've painted wood with emulsion. You have to rub the wood down first so the paint will take and then once it's dry, use a clear varnish over the top so it won't matter if it gets wet. Acrylic paint dries to a hard finish though but it's expensive to buy ...
There's a blog, I think if you google miss p painting furniture you'll find it, where she did a detailed description on how to paint furniture with emulsion. If I recall it takes loads of prep work, but looked really good.
If you have a small amount of paint left over, you can easily repurpose it and use it to paint wood furniture. Enhancing old furniture around your house with your leftover supply of paint is a great way to reduce waste, while adding colorful accents to your home’s décor.
Once I paint I seal with a water based poly (usually in a satin or gloss finish, but you can also use a flat finish for less sheen) to add durability to the paint. So the final sheen/finish depends on what you use to seal the paint.
